The
2008 State WIC Nutrition Program Conference will take place
Monday, October 27 & Tuesday, October 28 at the DoubleTree
Hotel-Seattle Airport. Some of the speakers this year
include:
Kirk Weisler
A graduate of Brigham Young University, Kirk believes that
people that are having a great life will do a great job, and
that having a great life is not a matter of chance, but a matter
of choice.
An expert at creating outrageously cool workplace cultures, his
unique “culture building” approach inspires & enables people to
create the workplace culture they truly desire and need. His
unique background includes US Army Ranger, work with At-Risk
Youth and team builder. A fun and engaging speaker he is
also the author of The Dog
Poop Initiative and
The Cookie Thief.
Lisa Marasco, MA, IBCLC, RLC
A born teacher, Lisa enjoys sharing what she has learned and her
passion for her topics comes through clearly in her dynamic
presentations. Lisa has been working with breastfeeding mothers
for over 20 years and an IBCLC since 1993. She holds a Master's
degree in Human Development with specialization in Lactation,
has published several articles, and has recently co-authored a
comprehensive new book entitled Making More Milk: A Nursing
Mother's Guide to Milk Supply with Diana West. Lisa
currently works with Santa Barbara County WIC and maintains her
private practice, Expressly Yours Lactation Services.
Addtionally Lisa serves on the Breastfeeding Coalition of Santa
Barbara County.
Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD
Dana is a registered dietitian who uses Motivational
Interviewing to help individuals make lifestyle changes to
improve health and lose weight. Dana has facilitated
trainings for the National Kidney Foundation, Legacy Good
Samaritan Obesity Institute, and Kaiser Permanente Center for
Health Research. Dana maintains a private practice in Portland,
Oregon.
Suzzanne Myer, MS, RD, CD
Suzzanne was a faculty member for thirteen years at Bastyr
University and helped to create the food allergy program at the
university’s teaching clinic. She has established a unique
position in her field due to her “natural medicine” and “whole
foods” approach combined with her clinical dietetic background.
Suzzanne also enjoys healthy consulting with food companies and
restaurants on recipe development and modification, nutrition
analysis and food labels.
Peter Menzel & Faith D'Aluisio
Peter Menzel is a freelance photojournalist known for his
coverage of international feature stories on science and the
environment. His award-winning photographs have been published
in GEO, Stern, Le Figaro, Der Spiegal, Paris Match, Focus, Muy
Interesante, El Pais, National Geographic, Smithsonian, the New
York Times Magazine, and Time. He has received a number of World
Press and Picture of the Year awards.
Faith D’Aluisio is a former award-winning television news
producer and the editor and lead writer for the
book-publishing imprint Material World Books.
Menzel and D’Aluisio’s first collaboration, Women in the
Material World, explored the lives of women around the
world. In 1996 Women in the Material World was
named one of the year’s Ten Best Books for the Teenaged by the
New York Public Library.
In 1998 the team published Man Eating Bugs: the Art and
Science of Eating Insects, a worldwide look at the human
consumption of insects. This critically acclaimed book won the
1999 James Beard Award for Reference and Writings on Food.
Menzel and D’Aluisio’s latest
book is around-the-world exploration focusing on food. Hungry
Planet: What the World Eats, details each family’s weekly
food purchases and average daily life. The book received the
coveted James Beard Best Book Award in 2006 and was awarded Book
of the Year from the Harry Chapin World Hunger Media Foundation.
Janet Anderberg, RSPublic Health
Advisor, Washington State Department of Health.
Janet is a Food Safety Expert with over 30 years of experience
and gives a very informative and entertaining presentation.
Debbie Cavitt and the Leschi Elementary Choir
The acclaimed Leschi Elementary School Choir, lead by Choir
Director and breast cancer survivor, Debbie Cavitt. The Choir is
reported to have brought down the house with their rendition of
Who Will Speak for the Children?
at the recent Children's Alliance anniversary celebration.
