Urge State
Representatives
to Oppose Efforts to Stop Menu Labeling:
This coming week the Commerce and Labor Committee of the
Washington State House of Representatives will hold a public
hearing on menu labeling. HB3160
will be heard. This bill is the companion bill to SB 6659 which
was heard last Thursday, 1/31/08 in the Health and Long Term
Care Committee.
HB 3160
is the restaurant industry bill,
which would eliminate the menu labeling regulation passed in
King County and allows restaurants to provide nutrition
information in confusing, hard to find formats that make it
challenging for people to find and use nutrition information
when ordering.
Please contact the Washington State House Commerce and
Labor committee members: Let them know that Washingtonians have a right to know nutrition
information in fast-food and other chain restaurants. Please
urge the Committee to support having nutrition information on
the menu and menu boards where people can consistently find it
and easily see and use it.

Urge State
Senators
to Oppose Efforts to Stop Menu Labeling:
On Thursday, January 31st at at 10 AM the
Committee on Health and Long-Term Care of the Washington State
Senate will hold a public hearing on menu labeling. Several
bills have been introduced in Washington to address menu
labeling.
SB 6505 is a strong bill, modeled after the regulation
passed by the King County Board of Health and is supported by
health experts and health organizations.
SB 6659
is the restaurant industry bill,
which would eliminate the menu labeling regulation passed in
King County and allows restaurants to provide nutrition
information in confusing, hard to find formats that make it
challenging for people to find and use nutrition information
when ordering.
SB 6786 creates a legislative task force to study menu
labeling. This bill is an attempt to stall menu labeling
efforts requiring legislators to review menu labeling and likely
will preempt any local menu labeling efforts until report is
completed. This task force is not needed since studies are
planned to evaluate the effect of the King County and New York
City menu labeling regulations.
Please contact the Washington State Senate Committee on
Health and Long-Term Care committee members: Let them know that Washingtonians have a right to
know nutrition information in fast-food and other chain
restaurants. Please urge the Committee to support having
nutrition information on the menu where people can consistently
find it and easily see and use it.
